Im a cashier at one of the attraction in Orlando, Fl. The oldest I ever got from my drawer was a 1909 VDB cent. I almost fainted. well not really but I was excited.

I guess it really does depend on where you live in the country... Between me and my fiancé we get 1 wheat in change about once every two weeks.. Sometimes once a week, sometimes once a month but I've found the average has been about 1 every other week.

Maybe someone in my area dumped a ton? I don't know but I don't complain.. Just add um to the bucket as I'm down to a couple needed for my set, and if I find one of those I'll pass out, lol.

The earliest I've gotten in change was a 1912 a month or so ago, and after that a 1919 & then 1923, most are 40's & 50's though. (I live in the hills of Western Mass by the way)

I get about 4-6 per year in change here in PA. In coin rolls I find 10-15 per $25 box from the bank so there must be a lot of people in my area who don't even pay attention to the coins they spend.

carmykle they are out there in your area. I'm also in the Tampa area and in the past year I've found over 1,200 of them.

I feel that there are still a lot of them in circulation but that they are considered rare due to the reasoning that since they were discontinued 55 years agos there has been literaly billions of Memorial and Shield pennies made. As time passes and more new coins are pressed their percentage in circulation decreases.

Increased current mintages plus that there are quite a few of roll searchers will make a coin appear to be rarer in circulation than they actually are.

The Indian Head penny is almost non-existant in circulation as I've only came accross 4 in the past year. Thanks to the Canadian tourists, canadian pennies are still popping up in our circulation here.

That is the exact same thing with me. It took a minute to see that it was a 1911. I spent a while trying to figure out if it was an s, but never succeeded. It came from a roll.

As a cashier, I have had two customers spend wheat pennies so far this week. Sunday, someone spent a 1917 and then the next day someone spent a 1951-D.

@wulffy11 I know you keep extra change in your pocket to exchange coins. My wife would do it for me when she was a cashier. By the way she was never short. He He

Found a half-dozen in my penny jar, including a non-rusted still-light-gray steelie. The punchline is that I'm Canadian, so I have no idea why I find more wheaties than I do King George Vs (zero so far...).

I still find wheats in change. Not as many as some years back but they are not that uncommon. The problem is that most found are from the 50's.

I live in canada and even I find wheat cents in my change every once in a while but, not any more because we don't use the penny anymore.

inventor719 do you think that the Canadian banking system would be gracious enough to return their unused American penny now that they aren't going to be using them anymore?

They're probably getting melted down with the rest (including at least one IHC, I bet). So if you want to unload some of your coppers legally, just dump them in...

I found a 1921 wheatie once. They're out there! I think I find 1 or 2 per every other roll worth of pennies I search.
