2005 Proof Set State Quarter Found In Circulation

collectorplay Valued Member United States 137 Posts	Posted 06/07/2013 9:02 pm My daughter brought me a shiny quarter she got as change from our local Target store. The second I saw how shiny and mirror-like it was, I knew what it had to be. It is a 2005 Oregon State Quarter, and I got my glasses and checked the reverse, and confirmed; it was an "S" mint mark. I'm thinking that for some reason someone opened a mint set and spent it. Is there any other explanation? San Francisco mint coins aren't made for circulation, right? All "S" mint coins would come from either a clad or silver proof set. 2005 mint sets would be "P" and "D" mints, with satin finish. Report this Post to the Staff

With the "S" mint mark and mirror-like surface, it is a proof quarter. And yes, I acted like it was gold or something, I've never before found a proof coin in circulation, I've already sealed it in a 2X2 folder.
