Here's a nice 1871 PEI which seems to be mostly lacquered..

The die polishing is so visible on the Reverse........

Wouldn't a good Acetone soak remove the lacquer from the coin?

Acetone can cause a photochemical reaction with bright mint state bronze and copper, the average humidity in a household would provide enough water vapour to do this. Unless you know what you are doing, I would leave the coin alone.

Thanks for the comments.

As SPP has mentioned...I don't plan to touch it. I just have always enjoyed seeing the die polishing on it. Maybe many 1871's came like this.........

When I received it in the 80's, the "powers that be" had said that it probably was a "Heaton Hoard" piece.

Truth or Fiction........?

Acetone on a nice red large cent...DONT DO IT. I did it on a nice red MS63/64ish. Took all of the lacquer off, but left a very obvious chemical rainbow all over. I think I would rather a coin say "lacquered" then "cleaned"
