Liberty 1886, 1799 And 1797 For Grading

The so-called 1797 Trade dollar is an obvious fake, as that design of coin was only made in the 1870s. I'm very suspicious of the 1799, both because of its rarity in the wild & because of the apparent rust stain. The first test is that any of them which is magnetic is a fake. The remaining ones will need to pass other tests, on the theory of "guilt by association". And I'm sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, but fake silver dollars, mostly from China, are ubiquitous nowadays. Edited by publius 08/15/2013 11:23 am Report this Post to the Staff
