There are a lot of beautiful classic coins but I have to go with Buffalo nickels. They look amazing both uncirculated and worn to the point of no date at all. You just got to love them...
My favorite old coins are the ones I get for free out of the ground with a metal detector. It's a real challenge to go out and find places that have 200+ year old coins to dig so I value them more than most of my store bought coins even if they usually have some condition issues. Besides, there's no pressure about which coin to get, what grade it's in or how much it cost, you take what you dig and that's that I like doing the restoration on these dug coins too. I've got a lot of pictures that show the coins fresh from the ground and then after I'm done with them. Some of them are pretty amazing transformations. If anyone's interested in seeing them I could post some up. Here's a 1787 NJ copper and 1782 Mexican 1 real that are just a couple out of the hundreds of early coins I've got my detector over in the last 20 years....
