1993-D Quarter Reverse Question - Coin Community Forum

jay4202472000 Pillar of the Community United States 853 Posts	Posted 09/30/2013 8:58 pm I noticed these gouges/scrapes while glassing this 93-D Quarter. Are they just die gouges, feeder finger scrapes, or something else. They just look a little different than the feeder finger marks I have seen before. Thanks all! Report this Post to the Staff

Note what looks like a capitol image in the lower left field under the eagle. Would have loved to see this coin in UNC! Report this Post to the Staff

The area in question does not resemble hair detail from Washington. There are a couple of die gouge examples on the obverse of 1996 quarters in the cherry picker's guide, if I remember correctly. It just seems like something else would have jumped out first. Wouldn't that part of the hair be one of the deepest recessed parts of the die itself since it is one of the highest parts on the coin. The gouges, or whatever they are, aren't light. They are prominent. Thanks for the ideas though. I will look it over again this evening. Report this Post to the Staff

It isn't possible but they look like scaled up, rotated almost 90 degrees to the left, leg feathers. It is amazing how close it would match. The gouges are just bigger than the leg feathers.
