I have no clue what this is. I bought it about 25 years ago for $5 at a flea market. The guy had a whole box full of various ancients. I always wondered if I should have picked up more.

It is a follis or half-follis from the Byzantine empire. Someone here may be able to attribute the emperor. This one of Heraclius (610-641 AD) is similar: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sb/sb0840.html

This is a AE follis of what appears to be Justin II and Sofia from the Constantinople mint with regnal date of either 6 or 7. Circa 571-572 AD

Yes! They are relatively inexpensive and loaded with interesting history. For example here is a better looking Justin II and Sofia on vcoins:

Here is a very reasonable lot of Byzantine bronzes (a starter collection):

Uncleaned lots of Byzantine bronzes are available for 5 dollars each or less. Most people like them with a sandy patina anyway, so the work in cleaning them is minimal.

Also I have found several nice Byzantine bronzes in general uncleaned lots of large ancient coins purchased for about 3-4 dollars each:

The coin echizento quotes is listed in the Sear Byzantine book as number 360, CV £6 way back in 1974. That's a typical condition for a Constantinople mint Byzantine copper; well worn or corroded, with dark greenish hue. For $50, I'd want a better specimen than that - one where the emperor's name and titles are at least partly legible.
