Hi...Never seen this before on a quarter, but maybe it is common..The punch mark "D" I below the surface of the coin, as though they punched it really, really, hard..Hard to visualize in the pictures..Any comments..Thanks.

It can happen. As the mintmark punch is driven into the die the metal of the die is displaced and pushed up to form a "hill" around the punch location. If that hill isn't polished off it will create a depression in the coin and the mintmark will be seen as sitting in the bottom of a depression.
