Folks:

In the 7/24/07 Numismatic News page 50 there is a discussion of Gene Witcowski & the 1952 Proof Superbird Qtrs, FS#25-1952-901 Cherrypickers Variety.

I have never heard of these 1952 Proof Superbird Qtrs, any insight?

Thanks,
Ron (ronaldb112)

They had a small "s" shaped mark on some of them on the eagles breast near the center, hence "Superbird".

There is a photo of one in the CherryPickers Guide 4th edition....

Look on page 183

Try searching teletrade, they usually have a bunch on it.

Guys:

Thanks, Jim:

Thanks, I have heard of Gene Witcowski, but when I looked at the pictures of Qtrs in the NN, it was very hard to see the S on the chest.

Most of the article was concerning Gene Witcowski health which is failing.

Amazon99:

If I get time this weekend, I am going over to a coin friends house to look thru his Error books, very curious on how an S got on the eagle breast that I can not see. "They" say 24+ exist.

My oldest daugther is moving into her first home so this maybe a crazy weekend. But I will try.

Really? This is what one of the teletrade auctions said: "Only 81, 980 proof 1952 sets were issued. It is possible that the Superbird variety represents a single reverse die then perhaps 15, 000 to 20, 000 strikes may have been made using this die according to David Lange."
