Once considered very scarce. This token was used on the ferry between Halifax and Dartmouth in Canada in the 1880s. During demolition of the ferry house, many of these were found in uncirculated condition. I would assume I have one of those here in my Canadian Colonial Tokens collection. Here's mine. The first true ferry to be employed in the harbour was not until 1816 the Sherbrooke classified as a Horseboat being powered by (in Sherbrooke's case) nine horses walking in a circular motion in the centre of the ferry powering the central paddle. This ferry was thought to be a large improvement to the previous service due to its speed and ability to transport more people and cargo from either side of the harbour. This ferry operated in the harbour until 1830 when the first steam ferry, the Sir Charles Ogle, entered service. The continuing ferry service remained the only effective way of crossing the harbour until 1955, when the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge was first opened.

From Brazil. Sorry about the glare. I was too lazy to take it out of the flip for a good pic.

Quote: This token was used on the ferry between Halifax and Dartmouth in Canada in the 1880s... Very nice and thank you for the backstory! Quote: From Brazil. Sorry about the glare. I was too lazy to take it out of the flip for a good pic. I have been guilty of that a time or three.

I am enjoying these where the boats are background rather than the subject.

While many of the earlier Canadian tokens depicted ships, I especially like this one. It is a scarcer token Breton #723 honoring Sir Isaac Brock. His name is misspelled as Brook. This one should clean up nicely (but I am not going to mess with it.) (yes- it is the one that I have on ebay)
