Odd State Quarter 2003-P Silver? - Coin Community Forum

motorwiz New Member United States 3 Posts	Posted 08/01/2014 9:19 pm I found a 2003-P Illinois State Quarter that does not appear to have the expected telltale copper sandwich. It looks like 90% silver. Is anyone aware of any silver proofs that are marked P ? If not, any idea why the copper is not visible? Any non-invasive tests to determine what it is? denco7 Pillar of the Community United States 2543 Posts	Posted 08/01/2014 10:28 pm Could be from the "post mint" platinum sets that you see on TV all the time, or I have seen many clad coins where the surface clading, during the minting process, runs down the side of the coin, covering the copper alloy core. If it is close to 5.67 grams it's plated. If it is close to 6.25 grams then it might be something. If it is close to 6.25 grams then the next step is a specific gravity test. If it is silver then it will have a SG of 10.34 compared to the 8.92 of a clad quarter. Report this Post to the Staff
