How To Detect Altered Or Treated Coins?

welder Pillar of the Community United States 1037 Posts	Posted 08/23/2014 10:50 pm 95% of what your asking in just educating yourself. Get some sort of magnifier, a magnet, and a small digital scale. Look at lots of coins on the Internet and at coin shows to become familiar with what interests you. The magnifier will assist in getting a very close look at the coin. The other 5% is intuition. If you are suspicious of a coin, chances are you are right and the coin is not what it claims to be. Good luck and Cheers! Report this Post to the Staff

But to answer your question, start looking at coins in each grade condition, as with "PCGS Photograde" (search engine this).
