I saw this 1890-CC Morgan on ebay. Are the marks on the lower obverse from a brush or some sort of cleaning? There are no similar marks on the reverse.

I am assuming they are not natural.

Thanks for opinions shared.

Oh, yeah. That's whizzing, which is arguably worse than cleaning. It looks like it was done with a wire brush.

Ouch, harshly cleaned. Worth well south of the asking price.

"Whizzing" shouldn't leave marks due to the force with which the cleaning is applied - it literally smooths out the metal. All this one qualifies for is "ridiculously heavy brushing."

Harshly Cleaned/Whizzed. I don't know what the person who did this hoped to achieve but it definitely looks a lot worse now than it did before. Not to mention the huge hit the value took.

Why would someone do this? I know we'll never know, but why clean just a portion of one side of a coin like this?

That's what stumps me. Was there a spot or some toning there?

I'd love to know.
