I just rolled the dice and bought this Jefferson nickel on ebay. I want opinions on the strike, look at the B and R in Liberty (as well as other letters) and also the "halo" around Jeff.

Seller claims this came out of a coin and currency set and is a proof. I have never seen a proof with these conditions.

Have I been had?

Proofs in 1994 were only struck in San Francisco.

The nickel was part of a 1994 Coin and Currency set and had a special matte finish to match the finish of the commemorative coin in the set. The finish was achieved with two strikes of a sandblasted die, and whether it's technically a proof or not, it is referred to as the "1994 Matte Proof Jefferson nickel"

Whether $37.74 is a good deal for that coin, I'm not sure. You could do some comparisons of completed listings to find out.

Either way it's a good looking Jeff!

Just as a point of reference, I just picked up a Jefferson Coin and Currency set on ebay for $34.27 (+5.75 shipping). The complete set includes an uncirculated Jefferson commemorative silver dollar, the matte finish nickel, and an uncirculated 1976 $2 bill.

appreciate the info but what do you think about the doubling of the letters...result of the double strike?

I just looked closely at mine and there is no doubling whatsoever. I would guess the lines on the image are some sort of artifact of the digital photo -- over-processing or something. The photo is also very grainy and shows a lot of chromatic aberrations.

You did fine getting that 1994-P matte proof Jefferson. If you wanted one certified, you could have had one for a little more. Now trying getting the 1997-P matte proof Jefferson. That's the one that's harder to find and will cost significantly more $$$.

Not bad but I'd think there could be a problem in the future if you tried to resell it for what it may be. Not a bad price but depends on do you need it or just want it.

If all of that doubling/tripling all over the obverse is real, you have yourself a very interesting coin!

I'm not knowledgeable about them, but I definitely see the halos and letter irregularities you pointed out.
