I recently came across a Peru 1849 8 Reales and I am having a hard time assessing the correct value of the coin. I know that the Krause Catalog is a good source of information, but it's values are often time off when it comes to scarcer coins. Does anyone have an idea of the value of this coin? I would also be interested in seeing the 1849/8/7 variety to see if mine is that overdate.

You have a scarce and beautiful coin there.
I have only found two on-line auction records for this coin, here:

Your coin is better preserved and appears nicely toned. I would value it higher than the one referenced.

A nice coin from Peru.

Thanks a bunch for finding those auctions! I was not aware of that search engine for coin auctions, but I'll be sure to check there next time I'm looking for auction records. Would I benefit from sending this off to be graded or should I just leave it raw?

It look very nice as it is, personally I would probably leave it as such If I intended to keep it
However, I understand (and accept) that encapsulation increases liquidity
if in the future you decide to part with it.

You'll miss the edge if you encapsulate it .
It's a personal preference, except for very high grade coins I don't see the point (for some in increase value though - or is better to sort).
