Collects82 Pillar of the Community United States 1316 Posts	Posted 11/11/2015 5:10 pm Hi, in searching around for my beloved coins of '82, my searches have returned some NGC ancients on Heritage. In the description is "BIL follis". What is this? My google search just pulled up other sales listings. Sorry now for what might be an ignorant question :) I'm yet add an ancient to my collection, but would love to have many! There is another that his half-follis. Maybe its a design feature? Numisma Pillar of the Community United States 4963 Posts	Posted 11/11/2015 5:22 pm I believe the follis was used in the Byzantine empire. Billon is generally a small amount of silver (in the vicinity of 10%) alloyed with a base metal, usually copper. Report this Post to the Staff

Athalbert Pillar of the Community Spain 629 Posts	Posted 11/11/2015 5:52 pm At the beginning "Follis" was an official sealed bag of money that contained a guaranteed amount of money, this was a method to avoid the neccessity of counting large amounts of coins, usually these bags contained 100 equal coins. So when Diocletian created a new coin that was the equivalent of 25 bronze denarius or 100 asses, it was natural to denominate the new coin as "Follis" like the bag of coins...
