Hi all, received very happily my first ever austrian thaler, after the 1632 1/2 thaler last year, and also my 2nd Drachm of Khushro II. Naturally I have concerns whether or not they are genuine, even though they seem alright and weigh within the usual range for an authentic specimen. After reading all that about very convincing Chinese counterfeits one can't help but get paranoid.

What do you guys think?

What I see is some idiot has attached a ring to an authentic old coin.

If this is a fake, then it's a very well made one.

I don't think it's fake, but it's damaged because of the bevel. As for the drachm, it looks OK to me.
Both great looking coins.

Drachm looks good...

As for the other one, its my pet hate when I see people drill coins or solder loops on them... it's a coin not a piece of jewellery... pfft

Exactly! irks me just as much as otherwise perfect coins with all too obvious clean marks. Those tooling-like marks on the edge look pretty suspicious to me though, don't know if anyone else thinks the same. Oh yes, the coin isn't entirely flat, although I was expecting it to be more rolled-up when I first handled it. Then again I've only had 15 kreuzers and a 1/2 taler up till now. Not miffed at all though, I got the taler for a decent price. Have seen worse examples go for more.

WHat the story is behind why these 6th/7th century Drachm's survive in such great condition though is what I'm interested in right now. Were they hoarded or buried by people during times of war or something? I'm not familiar with Persian history.
