Good morning, seeking a little advice please.
Got back into my collection after almost 30 years and have been going through the stuff I had boxed up.
I picked up some good stuff back then and picked 4 to send in for grading.
2 graded fine, but 2 came back PVC residue.
I don't have them in hand yet, but when I did my initial determination on which ones to try first, I didn't see anything wrong with them. Admittedly, I am sure I bought cheap 2x2s when I was a teen and they have been sitting in them for 25+ years.
Before I spend anymore money I have some questions If I may.
1) What should I look for on the other coins (I didn't see anything on the ones I sent in)?
2) Is there anything I can do for these coins?
3) If yes to #2, can they ever be graded or shall I keep these in their new mylar flips and just keep the sentimental ones and replace them with better coins?
Thanks for any advice. -D

#1 , look for greenish slime or tint on your coins. #2 , there is a product called verti-care made by one of our members,'' badthad'' you can buy it on e-bay or when you have enough posts you can contact him directly. also give these contaminated coins a bath in Acetone. #3 , sure once these coins are rid of PVC, Verdigris, etc. they can be graded and slabbed by TPG. If they are worth it. Rule of thumb : $100 coin value or more. to CCF and glad to see you came back to the hobby.

Thank you very much. That is a good piece of advice regarding the value, the 4 I sent in were semi-keys and are around $150-200, but for the others, I will just work on getting them in better shape and store them better now that I am wiser :)

Quote: give these contaminated coins a bath in Acetone. Do this step first then Verdi-Care. Read up on Acetone in the, "Search Coin Community."

If a coin has been stored in PVC but hasn't had time to develop the green goo yet, it will still have that distinct smell. The only way I can describe it is a metallic/chemical type of smell, particularly with copper. This will go away with the right treatment as T-BOP and many others will attest to. So even with little to no visual signs of PVC damage it is still detectable to an experienced grader if not treated.
Just talking about it gives me flashbacks of that terrible smell and tacky residue on my fingers after pulling dozens of coins from the those pesky old PVC coin folders.

If the PVC hasn't reacted to the coin's surface and caused pitting, only a residue on it then a wash in acetone or xylene is your goto way of removal safely. I rinse every coin I submit (which isn't many any longer) and have never gotten taged for having one come back with PVC residue.
