This little guy is an AE4 nummus from the time of Gratian, 378-383 AD. I'm measuring it at about 12mm or so. He ordered the removal of the statue of Victory from the Senate, ended the institution of the Vestal Virgins, and was killed a year later. The Western Roman Empire had less than one hundred years left to go.

This Roman coin is really itsy-bitsy coming in at about 11mm, a nummus from the time of the Emperor Valentinian, dating to 425-435 AD. The reverse shows Victory. Made in Rome itself during the years when Rome lost North Africa to the Vandals. Valentinian himself was still only a kid under the tutelage of his mom and the empire lay in the hands of the famed general Aetius. The Western Roman Empire had a little over 40 years left to go.
