There is a lady that owns an "Antique Mall" in my home town and is selling off her deceased husbands coin collection a few at a time. She'll put 5 or so in the sales counter every week and you never know what it will be. This morning she had this 1869 and it seems to be in great shape.I have limited knowledge of Shield nickels. This is the first one I've purchased. I am a penny man but thought I would wade out in the water a little deeper to see what it was like collecting other varieties. I've bought coins other than pennies but it's never been a passion. I was wondering about what to do with the tarnish of the coin and if it should be cleaned or left alone. The tarnish is appealing to me and adds to the overall appeal of the coin. In the aspect of monetary value, does tarnish taking away from the luster decrease the value? I've never had to think about this because my focus has been on non silver coins. I am grateful and appreciate those who would give me advise. Thanks so much! Jonathan   |

That's not tarnish, but severe corrosion. Notice the roughness of the surfaces. Value is going to take a big hit. I think it is worth no more than $5-10, and the lower end of that range is more likely.

Yes, a lot of environmental damage (perhaps buried at one point), and worth around $5.

Thanks guys for the input....I paid $21 and some change for it. It was a roll of the dice, don't know much about Shield nickels but like an old coon dog I'll be on the hunt. Thanks and happy hunting! Jonathan |
