From the accompanying pamphlet issued with this HOF for Great Americans medal in 1968: Quote: Ralph Waldo Emerson was a contemporary of Carlyle, Coleridge, and Wadsworth. He began his long association with Thoreau and other "transcendentalists" who believed God to be inherent in all nature and man's fulfillment should be according to his individual beliefs." Dexter Jones was the sculptor of this medal.

Nice examples! For what it is worth, I spent a lot of time on Lake Lanier back in the day.

From wikipedia: Quote: Due to the displaced cemeteries and unmarked graves Lake Lanier submerged during its creation, the body of water is rumored to be haunted with ghosts. Phil Torres, on an episode of Expedition X, performed a dive on a submerged cemetery and discovered tombstones that had not been disturbed, complete with mementos left by loved ones, suggesting that the government did not relocate graves as promised.

After the death of his fiance, Washington Irving immersed himself in his writing. The results included Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, first published in 1819. Irving was appointed Ambassador to Spain by President Tyler. This 1968 medal was sculpted by Adolph Block.
