Hi, I've come across this coin with a counter mark on it. I can't really find anything about why this would have been done?

The picture isn't great but the counter mark says J.Wade, and is stamped quite a few times.

Can anyone shed any light?

Typically, during the 19th century marks such as this were put on circulating coins as advertising (probably a more common practice in the U.S.); however, the multiple applications suggest to me that maybe someone had gotten a new metal stamp and were simply "trying it out"....

Thanks Lucky Cuss. I quite like the idea of this. I'm intrigued by the quirks of these things
