Thoughts On Cleaned Morgans? - Coin Community Forum

casualcollector New Member United States 10 Posts	Posted 04/05/2008 11:12 am Hello, Here is a 1884 Morgan from the great electronic yard sale, that cost a total of $25. I would like to know why it is so shiny. Has it been cleaned in some way, and if so how badly has it been damaged? I personally don't think a coin should be cleaned unless it is has some foreign substance on it, and certainly never polished, but does it really effect the value of a coin like this in today's world where the value of the silver may soon exceed the value of the coin? NGiles Pillar of the Community United States 527 Posts	Posted 04/05/2008 12:05 pm Judging from the condition of the coin and your description of it being shiny, I would guess that it has been polished or cleaned. Polishing can definitely hurt the value of the coin. Cleaning, is always contraversial, but if it is done properly, can help the coin's resale value if it is in bad shape to start off with. Higher quality coins should be left alone. The value of the silver should never exceed the value of the coin. As the price of silver rises, the value of the coin will increase exponentially. The coin will always have the added numismatic value. $25.00 is a little high for a coin in this condition, but not too bad. I would check it against the listings for this date at http://www.vamworld.com/. You may find that it is rare variety which can increase it's value.
