They were simply distributed by a mint employee to Colonel Green, who then sold them to 5 collectors (correct me if I'm wrong). It's not like the 1933 $20 where the coins were struck after gold was recalled, and thus illegal to own. Besides, it happened such a long time ago. Can't we just get over it? A 1913 Liberty nickel was sold in 2013 for $3.1 million. I'm sure there are plenty of millionaires out there who wouldn't mind dumping at least half that on a newly discovered, well-known American rarity, no matter what condition it's in.
