Quote: Does the OP get the points if no one can match the coin at all? They way I understand it, the points only count for individual rounds to determine a winner who then gets to continue with their own coin. Points are not accumulated from round to round. If no one can even get 1 point, then the challenger posts another coin and it starts over. It seems that mysilveryears gets 3 points and is the winner of this round.

I guess I will go for one point this round and post my 1 sol piece from the Kingdom of France, 1783: ----- I think waiting one week for each round may be a little too long. I am not sure how many days would be the right number, but with the previous round, there were pictures posted on the first three days, and no pictures for the last four.

Maybe it should be up to a week, but move forward if two or three idle days go by.

Cool game with a very limited pool of players. I'm enjoying every coin presented.

Quote: Quote: Who is supposed to post next? Mysilveryears Alrighty then. I'd like to add a poll to this post to give the group a chance to weigh in regarding options. But that's only allowed by the OP. Sooo.. I'll just ask: Should I put up a *serious* challenge? I am a hardcore darksider' through and through; given the limited participation here thus far, I suspect it would be fairly easy to post a coin no one else owns, from a place that no longer exists, or something that is not so tough, but on the expen$ive side. Just imagine if that fellow with the awesome early US gold collection were to win a round. Could anyone match a turban head eagle? Not moi... Perhaps it should be a 'medium' challenge, something tough enough to be interesting but still quite possible, like the 1784 ecu posted by Dorado? Or maybe y'all would rather just see another Morgan? I like the idea behind this thread, but it would be a whole lot more fun if more entries happened, and the rules delineated more clearly. If it gets too tough, everyone will lose interest and drop out, unless they just like to see odd world coins or rare and costly stuff. So chime in, folks. Your input counts. Plus I could use some extra time to sort through my disorganized hoard. -msy (an abbreviation for 'messy' )

My heart says make it easy. My gut says make it difficult. You should probably shoot for the middle.

If no one can even get 1 point, then the challenger posts another coin and it starts over. It seems that mysilveryears gets 3 points and is the winner of this round. O, now it clicked! I know I'm the newbie here, but, if I may, suggest a couple additions to mysilveryears' adjusted rules that I think could really solidify this game and make it fun! Quote: Suggestions to make the game more fun/interesting/possible:
1)- Allow for exact, close, and approximate matches. 2)- Do it on a points system. For example, 5 points for exact match of date + value + country or jurisdiction; 3 points for close (two of above three); 1 point for approximate (one of the three criteria). 3)- Keep a running total of each participant's point count. 4)- Highest point count for each challenge wins the chance to post the next challenge.
This way it is more likely someone will have something to contribute. Under these rules, my 1/4 ecu would be a 3-point entry. Any other Henry III French coin would count for 1 point. On a 5 point scale should we not have a 2 and 4 point possibility as well? I propose that we take the three criteria (date, value, and country/jurisdiction) and assign points as follows: 5 points- exactly matching all three 4 points- exactly matching two and approximately matching one 3 points- exactly matching two 2 points- exactly matching one and approximately matching one 1 points- exactly matching one Example coin: 1910 British Half Penny -1910 British Half Penny- 5 points -1902 British Half Penny- 4 points- matches value and country and has the aprox. date match (Edward VII 1902-1910) -1910 British Shilling- 3 points- matches date and country only -1909 British Half Crown- 2 points- matches country and aprox. date (Edward VII) -any British coin, any half penny or any coin from 1910- 1 point. In this example, the aprox. date match is straight forward, but for some coins might not really be possible without also matching the value. Any Lincoln Wheat cent, for example. It could still be possible for many classic US coins, though (Seated, Barber). Also, if a 5-point coin is posted within the playing time frame (whatever that is), maybe give a day for everyone else to post their similar coins and then continue to the next challenge coin instead of waiting for the playing time frame to expire. That's my two cents

Nah.. maybe next round. The full moon is coming up.. I feel like posting another large coin. Quote: january1may ..A new participant? I always enjoy your articulate, well thought out posts, j1m. Let's see how well you can represent your own country. There should be plenty of opportunity for 1-pointers with this offering. But a match is going to be a challenge.Russia 1732 rouble of Catherine the Great Anna: edit- thanks, january1may for correcting my goof-up.

Quote: Russia 1732 rouble of Catherine the Great Anna, as it happens. Catherine the Great was three years old in 1732, and wouldn't start to rule until 1762. I'll answer with an actual ruble of Catherine the Great... ...in crappy condition, haha. Though I could hardly afford a better one! (The crappy photos are entirely my fault, however.) Russia, 1 ruble 1770. AG details (scratched, holed). ...I'm pretty sure someone else on CCF has an actual Anna ruble, so I'm unlikely to win this round. It's the best I could give, however (since there is no 1732 Russian copper). (Note: I have an 19th century ruble in better condition, but I wanted to post an example from the 18th century.)
