@paulCT

the "three brothers from Saxony" is a very interesting coin ! I like this piece a lot - quite unusual to have more than one ruler in a coin portrait

Alfonso XIII became King of Spain as a newborn: his father died of tuberculosis
another king of spain who became heir of the throne was Charles II

below is a ducaton of the Spanish Netherlands
1670 Flanders (Brugge) Charles II

1c5d7n5m You're right it's an interesting coin but it lacks the details on the obverse so I'm looking to buy a better grade one. As far as I know there's also 3,4 and 8 brothers, saxony/saxe weimer types.Personally I like the brunswick 'wildman' thalers and the mansfeld 'st george' ones!Very nice ducaton and well preserved!I have a 1665,philip IIII,brabant, piece!

thanks PaulCT !
the baby face is OK - but this coin probably has been recovered from a hoard (quite a bit of corrosion)

for Philip IV it is easier to find good strikes

the Brunswick 'wildman' and Mansfeld 'st george' thalers are indeed very nice designs, and not too rare to be able to find one, with some patience ..

1c5d7n5m There's one particular ducaton that I'm trying to find in a decent condition and that's the Charles II, Milan mint,1676.In my opinion the Brunswick and Mansfeld one's are a bit rare in good grades and even the worn pieces are expensive compared to other thalers, like the austrian Ferdinand II(n.d types)or the 3 brothers ones.Last year for example I was offered a very rare mansfeld 1631 death thaler for 100£ but because from time to time I act like a retard I refused to buy it and I've been regretting ever since. Also I lost an auction for an 1613 wildman thaler with a misspelled legend(HOENSTUM PRO PATRIA instead of HONESTUM PRO PATRIA)which might be a very rare error!Sad memories!!

paulCT,

probably you have seen the interesting example of the 1676 Milano Ducaton in Coinfactswiki, where it is stated many pieces were poorly produced
http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/M...ppo_Dav-4005
this nice example was auctioned for a relatively low price compared to other examples

with numismatic frauds that become more sophisticated as copying technology improves, it seems wise to think twice before buying impuslsovey because it seems a cheap bargain
the more popular and wanted a type of coin, the greater this danger
being careful is a good principle

1c5d7n5m I have seen the Coinfactswiki page regarding this ducaton and I agree that 200 euros is very cheap! If you were referring to the 100£ I was asked for the mansfeld thaler you are right, it looks suspicios, but the coin was genuine. The dealer sells a large amount of coins weekly and had no idea about the value of the coin so he asked 100£ as it was a large crown!I said i'll buy it next week because I was sure nobody will buy it since most of the collectors in UK are into english, ancient coins.I'm very aware and worried about the frauds.I'd say we get less than the ancient coinage case but nevertheless, attention, patience and a certain level of experience is needed.Last year I had 2 fake thalers, the style was spot on,right weight but they were made of steel so I went for the refund!

Lots of beautiful coins to look at.
I am surprised to see the popularity of the Peruvian coins.
I don't think I saw this one yet.

Nice item, but am I the only one who hopes that the Elizabethan collar never comes back into fashion?

I'm sorry but I had to just at that.

In all seriousness though, at that price the coin is a steal unless someone used it as a door stopper for the last 50 years... If you refused it, then your intuition gave you pause for a reason. I've learned to trust my intuition over the years.

Good stuff posted... keep em coming. I got a nice Ducaton I won recently that's arriving from abroad. It looked splendid in pics and I hope it's as splendid in hand. I'll post pics when it arrives. In the meantime, here is a new arrival:

1808 120 Grana (Naples)

oriole You never know!
cableguy815 Unfortunately there was no intuition involved at the time!Looking forward to see your ducaton, you have some top coins I have to say!!

Here's my first crown of the year, 1641 Augsburg city view thaler.Just bought it from a coin dealer with more than 5500 positive feedback on ma-shops and I'm a bit worried that, although I was guaranteed the coin is genuine, when I do the ping test for silver it has a long funny noise. On the other hand this would not be the first one I'm buying from a major dealer that sounds a bit off.Maybe I'm paranoid or it's because I'm used to the sound of more recent silver coin.

PaulCT - Nice Thaler! I've been chasing this Augsburg variant for a good while now. Higher grades like yours are hard to come by and can get pricey.

I bid and lost on this in Nov. I believe my Max was 700EUR and it hammered for 1,000EUR.

World-Crowns-Gems-&-Rarities-Crowns;-Post-Your-Gem-Crowns-Here

I did however just win a 1640 one in a foreign auction for 600EUR - I think it was an OK price. I'll know better when it arrives, which should be soon.

This is what I won. Not the best pic, sorry.

About the ping test - I feel this kind of old silver never sounds quite like what you'd expect. In my experience the sound is often times deeper/more hollow. I don't see much in your Thaler to suspect it's authenticity. If it's not a secret, what'd you pay for it?

As for my Ducaton, it arrived yesterday. I posted it here first because I had some small doubts about it's authenticity. I'll repost here once I feel more certain it is authentic.
