Beautiful ducatón, I'm looking for one with that bust for my collection. The coins of Charles II have a worse quality of mintage than those of his father Philip IV, much harder to find them on high grades. My patagon is not perfect, but is quite worthy. That ducaton is a very good piece!... but the half ducaton is incredible... so rare. The health of Carlos II was bad because of 200 years of inbreeding xD. He had Klinefelter syndrome. It really was a turning point, where the Spanish influence in Europe almost ended, and the influence in the new world began to decline.
BTW, I can see you are Belgian. I'm using Vanhoudt's catalogue for that period... would you recommend me to complete it with Delmonte or Van Gelder & Hoc... or is enough with Vanhoudt's?
Regards 1c5d7n5m!

Quote: My patagon is not perfect, but is quite worthy quite worthy indeed ! perfection for hand made coins from this period would raise doubts, considering the number of modern numismatic frauds the imperfections make the coin really interesting I share your interest for the ancient large silver pieces from the Spanish Netherlands. Delmonte's Silver Benelux is a standard reference work I rely on very much. It was written in close collaboration with the late Jacques Schulman who had a fantastic overview of all circulating pieces in great collections. Below is another half ducaton from Carlos II ; this piece wat minted in Antwerp, Brabant. The reference is Delm.337 - R3 This very rare coin was recovered in 1981 from the VOC ship 't Vliegend Hert (built in 1729 and shipwrecked in 1735 near the coast of Vlissingen, Zeeland). More than 2 centuries of sea water were a bit harsh to the coin, but the portrait is quite nice Carlos (Carolus II) was a tragic king indeed; because of his inherited complex physical and mental disease he was called " El Hechizado"; the superpower France directed by Louis XIV - le Roi Soleil - took advantage of this weakness. Carlos died without an heir, and this initiated the Spanish Succession War. portrait of Carlos, about the same age as on the 1684 coin. edit: Delm. # in photo 330 => 337

txabs, looking again at your splendid 1630 8R from the Segovia Mint, one can only admire the technically advanced proces for minting these coins when compared to the hand-hammered silver pieces elsewhere. In http://www.segoviamint.org/english/technology.htm I read that Philip II opened a second new Mill Mint in Segovia after transfer of the technology from Tirol.

I guess best option here is opening a new post to talk about Segovia Mint, we could discuss a few facts, and teach you guys some stuff (I'm not an expert, althoug I have some very good bibliography). It's so curious, and as I said, a lot of Spanish collectors consider Segovian 8R as the most beautiful coins ever minted in Spain, if we ignore the coins only affordable for rich people, like 50 reales. I'm opening a new post in the next few days... is not easy with Christmas, but I will do it as soon as I can. Happy new year! (and again... sorry for my english)

Txabs - first of all welcome! Second of all, those are beautiful pieces.
@1c5d7n5m - thank you for the history lesson. Always nice to have a story behind the coin - your knowledge never ceases to amaze.
Hoping to post a few pics of some of my newer pieces before I go MIA for busy season.
Anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! May 2019 be filled with amazing crowns at ridiculously low prices :)
