GERMANICVS - that's still a mighty impressive collection. I just want you to know that it was in now way my intention to diminish your Chile 8 Rs. Quite the contrary, your pieces are most commendable!

The part that I struggled to understand is why are these pieces receiving so little "love"? If 5 or even 10 pieces are known to exist, then these pieces should sell for thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. Instead, they sold for a few hundred... that's kind of a for me. If an equally scarce German or USA coin existed, it would probably sell for 6 digit numbers.

As an example, your assertion of the 1817 8R seems correct. The below specimen sold at a heritage auction for $7,500 in 2011 and the description reads

"Ferdinand VII 8 Reales 1817-FJ, KM80, XF Details NGC (surface hairlines) Tarapaca Collection, cleaned long ago and now lightly toned. Very rare final date of this colonial denomination at Santiago. Less than ten examples are believed to exist, and this date was only struck in the early days of January before the fall of the Royalist government. From The Tarapaca Collection of Chilean Coins Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $2750 in VF, $5000 in EF."

This is an XF details coin that hammered for $7,500.... why would an equally scarce issue hammer for $400? From my perspective, the only answers are either the supposed scarcity is inaccurate or the issue is extremely unpopular.

Good morning, Cableguy815,

You ask an interesting question, so I went back to acsearch to look at the prices realised for the 4 recorded sales of the Santiago 8R 1795.
It turns out the piece which sold for $444 was holed and expertly repaired:

World-Crowns-Gems-&-Rarities-Crowns;-Post-Your-Gem-Crowns-Here

ie, a damaged, quite probably cleaned and unattractive coin.
The other 3 recorded sales hammered more in-line with the scarcity of the coin.

However, in general you are right. Prices for this particular issue - i,e Santiago 8R's of Carlos IV - remain generally low. I believe this has to do with the fact that this is a long running issue (running from 1791 to 1807) thus individual scarce dates like the 1795 command less attention.

Another factor I believe is that Chilean Colonial coins remain a relatively specialised niche collecting area where only the well known rarities, for example the 8 Reales of the previous Mundos y Mares type (of which only about 60-70 are known for all dates combined), or the Coquimbo peso of 1828, are known to the general collecting public.

As you mention, if these were US, English or even some German coins the prices would be different....

I will post next some of my Chilean Republic 'Volcano' pesos. This is a series which has become quite popular, with some truly scarce coins, and which tends to command a wider global collector attention.

Chilean coins have a big problem. Because of their rarity, they are expensive coins, hard to find, and virtually impossible to complete the full series. "Normal" collectors, as I define myself, who can't afford thousands or tens of thousands euros for a single coin, used to look for an "admiral" portrait which was sole on Santiago... and enough.

Most people, even those in this forum, do not know the quality and difficulty of the series that GERMANICVS taught us yesterday... Very high level numismatics

GERMANICVS Awesome 8 reales pieces!txabs Very nice kruisrijksdaalder!I have an 1567,but yours is in a better grade! My latest purchase is a 1624 CZ,Stolberg-Stolberg thaler,a coin that is not rare, varieties exist, the only bugging issue is the missing T in STOLBERG(obv.).I couldn't find any similar error(?) in my research so I'm not really sure about what to say. It's silver, has all the right parameters and was bought from a reputable auction house so the idea of a fake is a bit far from me now.
cableguy815 Since I know you'll see this i'd appreciate if you could give your thoughts on a post that i'll make after I finish this one! It's about an 1643 Augsburg thaler! Thanks in advance!

*Finally* lucked into an original specimen of these elusive 'memento' dollar-size coins in a condition I like, at an affordable price.
If anyone knows the actual date of this piece, or how to determine that, please advise.

@mysilveryears Great memento dollar there!Yours is from 1927, it's differentiated from the earlier memento dollar by the two star things beside "memento", six pointed for 1927, five sided for 1912

@GERMANICVS - it is we that should thank you for sharing those pieces of your collection with us. We're all brothers here with the same passion Joining this forum was one of the best things I did. I love this thread - it has been awesome to see and "meet" similar minded folk and see what kind of interesting pieces people collect.

@Pepa - that's a nice looking George there.

@Mysilveryears - That's a nicely toned memento dollar. Looks like it may have been cleaned a long time ago but has retoned very attractively since. They used to be quite affordable but have become extremely popular. Now, finding one below $100 without a lot of damage or wear is no easy feat.

@Paul & Txabs - those are some great pieces. I've mentioned here many times before, I'm a huge sucker for blue iridescence.

Txabs - as promised, here is my recent Duros haul from the Aureo auction.

1898 5 Pesetas - A common issue but in blast white with loads of luster; sadly an unsightly scratch on Alfonso's neck

1854 20 Reales (6 pointed star - Madrid mint) - a nice lustrous specimen. Has been lightly wiped on obverse

1855 20 Reales (6 pointed star - Madrid mint) - another nice lustrous specimen. Also has been lightly wiped on obverse

NICE!. So difficult to find those "peggy face" type with that perfect hair, is the first part to suffer the wear. High level duros, Do they came from the Isabel II collection on january? I bet several pieces but can't get any of them :(

Congratulations!
