This coming November 11 will mark the centenary of the armistice that effectively ended the First World War.

I'll start this off with a French franc. Over 50 million of this denomination were struck for the year in .835 fine silver.

In stark contrast to the lovely silver French franc I posted above, here's a couple of locally issued German notgeld coins.

The first is a 15 pfennig from Munich, made from zinc (Funck #348.1).

The other is a 25 pfennig from Coblenz, ferrous in composition (Funck #80.2). This one is marked as "kreigsgeld" (literally, "war money").

And I know they're not coins, apologies for that, but my Great Grandfather's Campaign Medals from the conflict. Name and rank incused on the edges. I thought it might be interesting to put something of the human side.

Here's a German 10 pfennig that doesn't seem to have circulated much (if at all). Of course, within just a few years after their issue, hyperinflation had rendered these utterly worthless. Toward the end of 1923, a ton of them (as in actual aggregate weight as opposed to a mere figure of speech(, even if anyone would've accepted such a ridiculous form of payment, probably couldn't have bought a loaf of bread.
