Hello Forum!

This will be my first post, after the introductory one, that deals with my collecting area.

Since my return to collecting, I've already found that high-quality proof coins, ones with beautiful cameo contrast, are not only scarce but can be costly as well.

Any words of wisdom for me as I pursue these coins would be most appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Welcome to the forum ChildJoyAgain. As an avid collector of proof coins your thread caught my eye. In reference to the cameo proofs they are truly beautiful in my eyes. My favorites are Franklin halves where I have all but one in cameo proof. All I can say is I wish you well in your search and am looking forward to seeing your results.

Welcome to this forum ChildJoyAgain

I don't think you should have any problem getting any of your Proof coins as long as you stick to the 1950-1970 time period you mentioned. I myself just started collecting proof coins just a few years ago and I found I was able to nearly complete my needs quickly and economically. I don't remember anything being super expensive and I normally bought 'decade' sets to get the best pricing. Now, I still need four Lincolns and two Franklins to complete my sets, but those are all pre-1950 coins.

Anyway, good luck with your search, and don't forget to update us on occasion with your progress.

Andrew!

I share your love of proof coins (especially cameo). So far, most of my experience is with Jefferson nickels. I know how those can get pricey, particularly with cameo.

I recently found that when trying to find '51 and '50 nickel proofs, the price difference between graded/slabbed and raw was fairly negligible. So, I got a slabbed '51 proof. I still need the '50, but I have my sights set.

I got all nickel proofs back to '52 in raw lots or cheap singles. Sometimes that doesn't quite work out. When you get back into that era of proofs, there is the whole haze thing that developed within the cellophane. This applies to Mint sets, as well, but it is more noticeable on proofs.

Anyway, I guess the point is that if you are going back to 1950, compare raw proofs to slabbed because the prices may not be too much different. Keep an eye out for nice raw proofs with noticeable cameo at a good price. Make sure to have a price reference handy ( Red Book or PCGS Price Guide).

Finally, please do keep us updated on your progress and maybe even share what you have so far. Show and tell is encouraged.

I would also suggest purchasing your set in either NGC or PCGS.

If you check Heritage sold prices, filtering with "Most Recent" you will know exact prices and you will be able to look at 10 different price guides and all census information, all in that one place.

Once you use this free information, you'll never use anything else.
Rest in Peace

to the CCF!

Make sure to find coins that you will be happy with in the long run. Don't just purchase a coin as a "hole filler" - I've done that before, and I ended up replacing it and spending more money that I would have if I just purchased the coin I liked in the first place.

Good luck in your search!
