Hello everyone, Let me start by introducing myself, my name is Simon, but I am usually known as Jacko or Jackool. I have been a member here for a while now, and I have been learning heaps from you all. Now, I have had this coin for ages, and have not been able to let myself settle with it just being a misstrike. The reasons for this: Firstly, the coin is exactly the same size as any other 5c piece that I have challenged it against. Secondly, as you will hopefully see, the Reverse is fairly normal (inc. rim Cud). Thirdly, I have pitted a 1c against the obverse, and it seems to be pretty close. Now I am not going to go jumping up and down making a fool of myself thinking that this could possibly be a mule, oh gosh I wish it was though, as I am still learning the numismatic game. I have been a student of coinage for about 24 out of my 28 years I would say. But I would still class myself as a novice. So in that vein, I am not going to make an outrageous claim. What I can do, however, is show you some pictures I have taken of it. Welcome Simon! Just tried searching for one on this forum, google, and ebay. Nothing! 1981 One cents were made at 2 mints and 1981 5c made at 3 mints, both of them were made at the Australian and Wales mint, the 5c was also minted in canada. So a mule is a possibility, It doesn't really look like a mis-strike to me, but I am inexperienced... There are heaps of other Australians on this forum that could help out here.. |

infected as in it doesn't work? it works for me.
The obverse looks like it has a double rim, the rev looks like a mis-strike?

Tiddyathome - The file works fine for me, I have the A.V. scanning constantly. The file seems fine from here.
Spedward - Thankyou, I have been serching it out for ages myself, and nadda... That's why I thought I would show my dillema to everyone here. I have just got a new camera too which I had been waiting to get so that I could post a piccie or two.
I have a few coins that make me scratch my head, and I will come to those in due time, but this is the most frustraiting and intriguing one to me. Only because I am so darn uncertain.

Peter - G'day, Other than this, errors only really started jumping out at me when I joined this forum, and since then I have been error-mad. After finding out what a 'Rabbit' was, I found my first 5 rabbits all within a few weeks.
As for being onto something, I really hope so, it would be nice.

Brissyboy might be the person who could perhaps shed some light on this. I know there are a few years where 5¢ have different sized reverses, but I don't think 1981 is one of those years. I can't really see anything different from the pictures, apart from it being a bit off centre, but my eyesight is pretty crook.  life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Thanks Nancy. Yes I have specialised a bit in the 1981 coinage. I think what you can see is a type of rim that quite a few years in the 80's had. The only real way of telling if it is a mule 1c obverse/5c reverse, you have to measure the Queen's effigy. It is be slightly smaller for a 1c than for a 5c. Measure from the top to bottom and from left to right for the points closest to the rim/text. Do this for a normal 1981 1c, 1981 5c and your coin. Your coin does appear to be either the RAM or RM strike but I find the image a bit hard to see the finer details. Wayne Oh and welcome jackool  Edited by Brissyboy

As far as I know there is no way of getting a virus from a jpeg file. There's no scripts, no way to execute it.

Brissyboy - How do I measure the effigy?, I mean, what tool would I use for that?, and where could I get one?
A mate suggested some tool from bunnings, but I have forgotten what it was.
I agree with you Learjet, atleast I can't think of anything jumping to mind about a picture virus. As you say no way to execute it.

What you need are some digital calipers, obtainable online or from a hardware or car parts store for $20 or less. A most excellent tool for a coin collector.
