@cldague, this really isn't my area of expertise, but I do note that your mm doesn't look like the pics on variety vista:

Of course, that could mean it is a new RPM which is even more exciting. More likely, unfortunately, it probably means that this is just a weird hit that partly scraped away at the D. I'm looking forward to seeing others' opinions on what this really is.

Nope, just a damaged mint mark, that took a well placed hit, causing the metal to get pushed over and flattened.

It is a damaged mint mark and MD due to a worn die.I am sure you'll have your victory dance sooner rather than later.
