NOT ALWAYS!


Ah, not necessarily so there wizzos...on certain years the actual puncheon used to imprint the mintmark was broken. On the D's for instance, 1974D and 1979D were notorious for that. On the S mintmarks may years show damaged puncheons being used, that filling in around the upper or lower curves. So NOT ALWAYS!

On the punch if it is broken part of the letter itself would be missing. You can't break the punch and get a "filled" D as the result. There is nothing in the center of the D punch to break.
