Hello, some help would be greatly appreciated in the evaluation of this quite interesting coin. A furrow begins from one end of the coin, removing some of the edge of the rim, spans across the diameter of the coin across the face. Now, I was first inclined to say damage. Then took a second then third look at different angles and changing the lighting angles. This "gouge" lays on top of the facial features and seems to follow the lines across the bridge of the nose and cheekbones without smashing them . Very cool.
I am very grateful for any comments or techniques as to how to more easily determine it for myself or possibly help someone else. check out the pics

To CCF! It's just a damaged coin. It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint). Someone scratched it, causing the Copper plating to break, exposing the Zinc core. It's a spender.

@CW37, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @E&V that this gouge is just damage. You can see how some of the metal was smushed aside when this linear mark was being made.
