Hello, I am new to collecting coins and have found a 1974 penny that has a stamp (looks like a shield outline) on Lincoln's Head. Please help identify the penny and if you have any knowledge about it, please share. Also, is this a rare coin? Thanks.

Not rare. The stamp is PMD. (post mint damage).

to CCF. They are known as counter stamped coins. It does look like a shield of some sort. First one like that I have seen. It is considered damaged to most coin collectors, unless you collect counter stamps.

Wonder if Chafemasterj has this one? Police shield perhaps, issued to kid's at open house somewhere? That's the kind of thing these represent.

Thanks guys. I can't find any photos of pennies with this stamp. What are counter stamped coins? Also who is Chafemasterj? Can you see if he has a coin like this?

To CCF! It's some type of shield counterstamp.

Pastel_fl, here is a link to Chafemasterj's running thread on counter stamped Lincoln cents. You can post your coin there and ask if he or another member knows of its origins.

No on value, they are quite common and worth only if in high uncirculated grades(condition) of MS68 and above, yours are in the XF40-AU55 range, far below the grade needed.

The counter-stamps hold little value but to a collector like Chafemasterj, the shield, a buck or two

here are a few:
