nalaberong Pillar of the Community Canada 2805 Posts	Posted 05/22/2013 10:10 pm 1785 (the 8 is more apparent when you tilt it under good light) sol found in a 12/$1 bin. It's now the oldest coin in my collection (I'm staying out of ancients for now). Not nearly as spectacular as most of the stuff in this thread, but as a small-scale collector, it was a good buy! The white things on top are dust, because centuries of toning have made the copper a little bit clingy (might be microscopic pitting?), and I didn't think the photo through enough so I just put it on a windowsill and every time I wiped off the dust and put it back down, more dust was kicked up and stuck again. (friend is 82, daughter is in her 50's) Despite offering to buy the cool stuff out of the stack, she just give it to me. The coolest stuff is the top row. ( War Nickel ftw!) Apparently, there are about nine types - two mintmarks (mine is Paris) and certain changes in design/size (some have a big "V" in the middle). mysilveryears Pillar of the Community United States 1898 Posts	Posted 06/21/2013 10:51 am This 1903 Germany State of Baden 5 mark is a large (38mm), fairly heavy (27.6gm) slug of silver, which might account for all the rim damage- too heavy to hold onto! I'll be holding it for the duration; it's one of the better junk silver tub picks I have made lately: This 16th century Saxony thaler of Christian I is even more massive: 40mm, 29.3gm. It's NOT a junkbin find. It was moderately costly but no more so than a comparable USA coin that is three hundred years newer. I freely admit to having a serious weakness for huge silver pieces with incredible detail issued when most of the American continent still belonged to the Natives. Report this Post to the Staff

My last purchase was from the Saturday coin market beneath Charing Cross Station in London: Morgan dollars are my favourite US coins! They don't turn up that often over here and are usually overpriced, but this one wasn't too bad. Friends in the USA gave me my first two - an 1882o and a 1921s - back in the 1970s! A few years ago I decided to try to get a complete date run (not bothering with different mintmarks yet!) 1903 was my third-to-last date gap - I now need to find 1893 and 1895, which will be expensive unless I strike very lucky!
