I've watched several pros (long term coin dealers) open 2x2s with their tiny pen knifes (the ones that have a blade seemingly too small to do anything useful with). They protect the coin edge with their thumbnail and poke along the cardboard, and just open enough to allow them to peel back one side of the plastic.
X-acto used to make a scoring blade which had a tiny, tiny tip, like 1/8".
But yeah, scares me too when I do it.

Most of my old coppers (colonials, Half Cents, large cents, Conders) and some of my German States, ancient, and early British coins are in kraft paper or white paper envelopes, and a lot of my other coins are in Dansco albums, Coinsafe tubes, or slabs. The 2x2 paper holders are reserved for cheap coins, duplicates, or stuff that they don't make albums for. It's like anything else: if you take your time and don't get in a rush, you will not have any issues. If you are careless and in a hurry, you might damage a coin. I don't (and won't) use plastic "flip" holders, seen way too many coins fall out / get damaged from residues and chemicals that were supposedly "coin safe." Some, but not all, of my coin storage is below. The binders are all I have in terms of 2x2's. I'd like a central place to put everything at some point. perhaps a ton of built-in shelving.

I always dream about a large walk-in vault. Not quite on the order of Scrooge McDuck, but you know. Maybe like a large-ish private wine cellar. Vault. One where you get your retina scanned for access and then go sit and have a glass of wine in your fine Corinthian leather chair while you admire your coins.  Or maybe my setup is just fine.  |

But be warned, having a retinal scanner increases the risk of you having an eye removed from its socket.  I only assume this is true because my fingerprint scanner has now cost me two fingers.  |
