1972 US Treasury Department Medal

The medal is a US Mint "List Medal" - it is number 713. The term "List Medal" simply refers to the fact that it was included on the US Mint's published list of medals available for sale to collectors.

The medal shown is one included in the Mint's "Historic Buildings of the United States" series. The Treasury Building medal was first available for sale in 1973. It sold as an individual medal (not in a set) for $0.50 in the 1-5/16" size shown; a 3-inch version was also available for $5.00. Visitors at the Treasury Building could purchase examples of the medals; they could also be purchased at US Mint gift shops and via mail order.

The "October 1972" seen on the medal's reverse refers to when the Treasury Building was designated as a national historic landmark; the commemorative ceremony took place on October 18, 1972 on the South Portico of the Treasury Building near the statue of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury.

The Mint strikes the medal from time to time; it is not always available for direct purchase, however.
