I do see a linear region going from the left hand side of the horizontal stroke to about midway down on the vertical stroke. It does look like a letter Y, but cannot be that so it must be Pareidolia. I see a few scratches around the date, could it be a well-placed scratch? Is the linear portion raised above or incuse compared to the field of the coin? Maybe with the coin in hand, you can see it a little better. n9jig Pillar of the Community United States 1005 Posts	Posted 12/16/2018 5:55 pm Could this be a bit of double die? I have not looked this close to modern pennies like this to tell if that is the normal appearance but looking at the 1 in the date as well as the rest of the date and the mint mark it appears to be a case of a double die situation.
