Didn't posted for a long time, but I'm still with coins.
Bought this recently for 8$. Seller was saying it has gold toning and provided these poor photos.

When I got this, appeared that it is not toning, and it is not gold color. More like bronze.
Gray area on motto looks like paint - but it is not paint. Acetone for almost a 24 hours, toothpiks - no way. It is very solid.
What do you think happened here?
I think it was failed galvanic experiment. Attempt to make this coin look like gold.

Coin edge has a lot of damage, it looks like it was made using steel rasp. Maybe it was a part of chemical reaction? To connect cathode I mean.

Just a thought. It may be a poor attempt at a racketeer nickel. Here is an old link for an idea of what I am talking about http://goccf.com/t/154036

Hey Roman , greetings . Well whatever it is it looks pretty permanent now . Add that to the poor rims and edges of the coin. not to mention that big scratch on obverse lower left side , I would say EF-40 Details .

That is a great link @john1. This short write-up by our @SteveCaruso mentioned in that thread was pretty interesting to me:

Yes, that's what I meant: poor attempt to make racketeer
