There are certainly signs of mechanical damage: the rims are banged so badly the coin is no longer round, and there are gashes reverse near 8:00 and 11:00.
So I think this poor coin suffered multiple forms of torture (harsh mechanical abuse and either abrasion or corrosion).
A sad fate for a very attractive coin for its era.
