I believe Wexler has a similar penny with a circle around Lincoln inside the memorial that he classifies as a "UFO" variety along with some other oddball errors... The article I linked to says they don't have an explanation yet. I'm guessing Mike Diamond would probably know if anyone did. Rackster Pillar of the Community United States 4809 Posts	Posted 01/18/2020 7:13 pm I have found these on cents, nickels and dimes (found this one today searching for 2016 DDRs). I posted the nickel here a few years back and the consensus was a lathe mark. These circles appear at the center area of the coin, which might suggest that the conical rod had a grove that wasn't removed during finishing or obliterated during die creation. Reading Wexler's notes on the 2004, there seems to be disagreement amongst the error/variety experts. It would be nice to know for sure what this type of phenomenon is attributed to. While this seems to occur often enough amongst a few denominations, I save them. Report this Post to the Staff
