I recently won an ebay auction listing a 1953PL set. There was a small box pictured, with the coins wrapped in tissue paper. It looks like it could be that old. I was wondering if anyone knows if the sets actually came in a little box like this ? (2 1/2" square)

Yes , box looks very similar to 1951 , 1952 and 1953 sets I bought on a few occasions.
The tissue paper does not look right . Usually found with a little bit of cotton baton
Lining the box. Coins were in clear cellophane , packaged separately and held together
With a brass/ copper single staple.
In other words packaging was similar to 1950 to 1955 Flat pak US Proof sets .
Owned around a dozen or so lifetime , none of the sets were all PL .
Some coins were business strikes , some were PL, some Specimen..
Nice find , show us the coins!

Cool, I picked up a box of these as well (last year). Mine came with the individual cellophane and stapled together. Would love to see some pics of yours to compare.

1 cent NSF - Hanging 3
5 cent NSF - Far
10 cent NSF
25 cent NSF LD
50 cent NSF LD?
$1 NSF FWL

Maybe the 5c, 10c, 25c would be PL, 10c possible SP, the others I am pretty sure are regular business strike.

The coins I got were only wrapped in the tissue paper and had been handled and bumped . These are the auction photos. OH, have I ever mentioned that I hate ugly toning ? Well I do, but this cost me under $150 Cdn. so I figured I couldn't lose....what if it was really a specimen set oooh. Anyways...

So after 2 days of checking and rechecking them , I decided that since they weren't pristine, and had that god-awful TARNISH and before they got black and the metal got eaten , I reluctantly dipped the silver. Ow, I know. Here's the results.
I wiped the cent and nickel with the cloth used to clean camera lenses. The nickel has some rust and a bad scratch in front of the beaver. It also has an extra piece of metal stuck on the queen's shoulder and another on the forehead.

Now the silver; the dime was black as could be. It came out a shiny uneven grey, lighter than the photo. You can see die lines under some of the legend on the obverse (and tiny ones on the field).

The other 3 came out very shiny with the 50 cent and $1 having a gold hue and cameo (but also handling marks).

At least I like them better this way.
