Harry, I have heard that the smaller 4" coils are better for nugget shooting. I see you are using a 11" and 17" coils. Those are great for the larger nuggets but how about the smaller ones. What was the smallest piece found with these coils? WOLF

These small coils are called sweepers and yes they do locate the very small gold,I use an 8" round mono and a 9"X 5" elliptical DD for my sweeping as they suit me down to the ground any thing smaller in detecting heads does finds smaller gold but It's harder to find and recover from the dirt because of It's size.
As for size the 17" found .7 of a gram but that varies in depth,down 5cm for a 1.7g to 20cm for a 4.9g,
the 11" finds .3 at depth to .1 on the surface
this is where the sweepers come into there own as they find the sub grammars

Got it so the 6"X9" DD I use on my DFX should do the trick to @ .3 gram at a little depth then? Made the mistake of checking the upstream side of things the last time I went. Had not read (or even had) the literature you sent until after that trip. Now I'm kicking my behind for the error. WOLF

Your 6" X 9" should do the trick, swing the coil in an ark sliding it on the ground remembering to keep it flat at the end of your ark and only advance the length of the coil with each swing,I find this very slow but very thorough.
I carry a small chain and nylon rope, tie one end to my belt the other to the chain and let it drag behind me far enough not to interfere with the detector, this is called chaining as you work the drag marks left by the chain which side of the chain you start on doesn't matter but it will give you a guide.
Now when to chain an area is up to you but a waist of time if you haven't found a nugget so the way I chain is I find a few nuggets close enough together means there could be a patch,so then I chain sometimes you hit on a few more and sometimes you don't and that's the luck of detecting the decision is up to the operator.

Don't forget to swing low and slow.
regards Harry

WOW! Great idea. I could use this on my beach hunts as well. As far as the area I'm going to work this probably will not work as it is heavily forested. But that don't mean their are not spots around that I can use it and will. Thanks more knowledge to help my endeavor. You ever met any one who has never found a nugget but tried. I don't want to be that guy. HA! WOLF

They were shipped there when the Aussie dollar was lower against the greenback (two months ago) and they are still selling for that price, any shipped to the States now or in the future will be more expensive depending on how much Minelab discounts the sales, and yes they are very expensive here as this is where the main market is and this is just for an example everyone (several) I detect with either has a GPX4000 or a GPX4500 all from Minelab.
I'll leave you there and don't forget to swing low and slow.
Regards Harry

Oh P.S. there's a mate Dave (one of the several) that I detect with he is using a GPX5000,he brought it when they first went on the market (Sep 1) and told every one that he didn't like it and the GPX4500 were the go the crafty bugger,I use one now (GPX5000) and know how good these are and that they have an edge over the GPX4500 Tim (one of the several) believed him until he used mine and changed his mind about the GPX5000.
Tim will update though his GPX4500 new he may update before we hit the W.A. gold fields now how crafty was Dave.
I'll leave you there and don't forget to swing low and slow,
regards Harry

Thanks mate where going to hit some remote areas so hopefully there virgin or untouched by the detector, there's one area in particular where there's washouts in a dry creek bed with heaps of dry blower workings either side of the creek, this does look promising but the photo is 4 years old and a lot could go on in the 4 years since the photo was taken (google earth)so when were there we'll scout these areas out before committing our selves to a long and I hope profitable stay.

regards Harry
