Dear people,

Anyway, just an update from my side.
There is really little news to report unfortunately.
The coin has been out of my hands for almost 3 months now, it has been collected and brought to Paris where it should still be waiting for export documents to take it to America where it can be subsequently authenticated.
Very annoying to be in suspense for so long, I would rather have had it here in my possession before that time.
I sincerely hope to give you a positive update soon.

Export documents? To send a North American coin to the United States? Well I don't know European law I guess it may be possible. I know I have never had any problem with coins I have purchased from Europe having a problem being exported. And it apparently had no problem being "exported" to Paris.

Thanks for the update. I come here every morning just to see if there is any news. The most nervous part for me would be having something like this go through customs.

I flipped your reverse image to see how the planchet flaws line up. The reverse needs to be rotated counterclockwise about 15-20 degrees, then everything lines up. I don't know how useful it is but figured I'd post it anyway.

Watching this thread with anticipation as well! If this is real, and I agree with everyone that it might be, it's one of those finds that can't possibly evade the front page of Coin World, and will make you a very rich man if you choose to part with it, OP. All the best to you.

I'm glad you bumped this. It's like an epic-length movie that just ends and you walk out going "Huh?". This coin got sent to Paris for authentication around July 23.

The good thing is, if the coin is real, we're in no danger of not hearing about it again even if we don't hear back from OP. He's come back from absences this long before, though; I think he only posts when there's news, but he doesn't forget. How could you when you have a million dollar coin?! If we never hear from either OP or the coin again, the necessary conclusion is that it wasn't real.

Call me a Spoilsport, but I don't see any signs of true circulation, I can't find any other examples with splits such as this planchet shows, the "J" that forms the left leg of the N is incorrect, and the toning is easily applied with 14K Gold test acid (green cap), sulphur ointment and a skilled hand. Plus, were it ground salvaged, there should be porosity.

Is there any evidence of ground salvage? If the ticket is right, the coin would already have been in a collection back in the 1790s (closer to its original mintage date than to the present), so maybe it had never been in the ground.

I mean, for all I know, maybe it was found back in like 1742 by some guy looking through his grandpa's old spare change jar, and saved because it looked neat. If anything, that sounds more plausible than a ground find, considering that metal detectors hadn't been invented yet.

I try not to deal with "maybes"; handling Facts is hard enough. The Facts that are evident would seem to dispel any notions of "Mint" manufacture. Somewhere, Armand LaMontagne is laughing...
