Came across this silver eagle on GreatCollections with some crazy toning patterns!

The reverse is outstanding! How is this not artificially toned?

It's certainly interesting. I wonder what it was in contact with that made it tone like that on the reverse.

@spruett001 maybe it was sitting on top of a silver bar in a safe for many years?

to the CCF!

Maybe this is heat damage to the coin from a fire. It could have been in a safe that was recovered after a building burned.

Or maybe a toaster oven toning test?

It would be hard to prove what caused this. It's strange that it's not noted on the slab as "Questionable Color." I'm not sure if I like the toning or not.

The reverse pattern was caused by rubber bands. I don't remember who it was, but I remember seeing a CCF post where the poster had left a group of silver eagles banded together in a safe for a few years and they yoned like that.

Most rubber bands contain sulfur.

Well I'll be! So there was a bundle of silver eagles held together by rubber bands, and that's what caused it! Clever haha

How did they apply rubber bands in perfectly spaced, perfectly straight lines, to round objects?

Somehow PCGS thought this was natural toning and not artificial.
