Found this curiosity today in a 3 pound bag of wheat pennies and not sure what to make of it. Weighs 3.1 grams, and not magnetic. I always love to learn new things and this one puzzled me. Any thoughts?
My guess was that the coin might've been plated, but then damage of some type caused this massive PMD effect to happen, cutting away at the plating, exposing the original copper of the coin.
To CCF , Forget about how it got that color that's irrelevant right now . I just want to point out to all newbies that when you buy 3 pound bags or any bulk lot of wheat cents from e-Bay or Esty ,Craig's List, ETC . this is the kind of junk you are likely to get . Granted not every piece will be garbage , they'll throw in a couple of VF's or even a EF but most will be inferior coins .
