Here is a recent purchase that I bought at about 22-d F price. I'm trying to figure out if it is a weak d variety. It's definitely weakly struck with a weak d, but I'm having a hard time with the variety. It is very similar to a die 1 on the obverse, except it is missing the appropriate die crack on the reverse. It appears to be missing the sharp line underneath Lincoln's bust, and that is a characteristic of die 4. I don't know enough about the die characteristics of a 4 though to identify it any further. What do you guys think?

anyone? do I need better photos? I know its not die 1-3, but I wish I had some good die 4 cents photos to compare it with. It really looks like it would fit in with the other weak d's, but I'm at a loss with the diagnostics.

Might get more luck if a mod moved it to the modern coin forum.

It is by far the earliest die state I've seen on a Die pair 4. See the merging of lincoln with the rim, and the fact that the 2nd 2 is clearer than the first instead of vice versa on the die pr 1 and that there is no die crack. Pretty much sealed the deal for me. Great weak d though

Ok, thanks. Does anyone have additional pics of die 4 lincolns to compare with? I see die 1-3 all over the place, but really don't know jack about this variety.

According to Lincoln Cent Resource, you DO have an early Die #1 (that is why there is no Die crack). The second 2 in the date is clear but still weak. The tell tale though is that the T-U-T of TRUTH is very bold.

That has to be a die pair 1 IMO. I own a die pair 4 no D it doesn't have near the detail of this coin. Also the second 2 is extremely weak in die pair 4, yours is very strong. I have to use magnification and tilt the coin just right to even make out the second 2 on my coin it's so weak.

I think what you have is a die pair 1, weak D. It's a solid VF coin (nice separation between the cheek and jaw).
