Had this coin for awhile but kept overlooking it figuring it was covered in some sort of rust material. Well I was wrong. But now I cant figure out why it is a different color. I took photos of it along side another 2000 P SC quarter so you can see the differences. I don't really think its a clad error because coin weighs 5.7 grams. To me the color is somewhere between a bright copper and a golden color.
Quote: but wouldn't a plated quarter weigh more than a regular quarter
Well State Quarters are supposed to weigh 5.67 grams - so your coin at 5.7 is actually heavier. If you have only a one decimal gram scale, your coin can actually weigh more than 5.7
Quote: all my State Quarters weigh 5.7 according to my scale.
Indeed. Yours is a one place gram scale - 0.0g If you want to accurately weigh coins then you will need a 2 place decimal gram scale - 0.00g They are relatively cheap on ebay, around 6-7$ US - free shipping.
Hermz I never thought of that so I just looked into the possibility and again if its gold plated it should weigh a lot more than it does. The gold plated 2002 P Mississippi weighs 5.83 and shows added thickness to letters and flowers on reverse. On my coin everything is very fine lined and shows smallest details...nothing is covered up by any type of extra metal.
Plating adds only a few milligrams to the weight of a coin. It is within the margin of error for regular coins, so the existence of plating cannot be determined by the weight.
