I have a nickel that appears to be missing clad layer, however I read that's impossible. Is this environmental or something else?

Nickels do not have clad layers, they are solid nickel 75% copper 25% nickel. Your coin looks like a once buried coin.

Copper nickel coins under the right environmental conditions can and will tone to a beautiful golden yellow.
I have seen only a few examples of this, all in higher grades, because the nice toning would have otherwise worn off.

Looks like a metal detector find that's been put back into circulation.

Environmental tarnishing/staining/chemical post mint damage. As mentioned probably spent time buried in acidic soil. Only appeal is for it's novelty, otherwise worth only 5 cents.
